Postponed Until Fall 2021: Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis Screenings
Robin Scott, Registrar
Dear Headwaters Families,
Due to challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Headwaters School has postponed vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings that normally take place each fall until next fall. While the state usually requires these screenings under the Special Senses and Communication Disorders Act and Texas Civil Statutes Article 4477-70), this year there is special guidance due to the pandemic for flexibility around these rules.
While not required this year, we also know that vision and hearing problems can affect a child’s wellbeing and learning. In addition, spinal screening can detect abnormal spinal curvatures at an early stage. So if you notice anything new with your child, we encourage you to talk to your child’s doctor.
Additionally, the Texas Department of State Health Services encourages you to take your child(ren) to a medical provider for well-child exams yearly. If you go to one of these appointments anytime from now until next fall, you can ask your provider for necessary vision, hearing, and/or scoliosis screenings. If your provider screens your child, please provide us the results (pass or fail) for our records. You can email to me or we will have a place to upload in Magnus this summer.
Here are the grade levels students normally receive screenings:
Vision & Hearing Screening: Grade 7 and all new students
Spinal Screening: Grade 7 girls and Grade 8 boys
Vision & Hearing Screening: K, 1, 3, 5, and all new students
Spinal Screening: Grade 5
Vision & Hearing Screening: Primary (4-years-old by September 1, 2019) and all new students
**IMPORTANT: IF YOUR CHILD WEARS GLASSES OR CONTACTS PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY BRING THEM TO THE SCREENING
The required screenings are included in your tuition for fall 2021 for the grade levels listed above.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me.
