Citizen Scholar Book Award Winner Amalia Allen '22

Congratulations to Amalia Allen '22 who has been awarded The Citizen Scholar Book Award from the University of Vermont.
The award celebrates high school students around the US who demonstrate the spirit of citizenship and scholarship. They may have campaigned for a cause, founded a community action group, or conducted research aiding social progress. These students are the movers, shakers, and change makers of the world.
 
Amalia was nominated for her dedication to academia and outstanding service within the Austin community, including (and certainly not limited to) serving as an Intern for Rep. Jasmine Crocket and as a Student Fellow for Noelita Lugo's AISD Campaign. Amalia has volunteered her time as a field organizer for Homes Not Handcuffs, a registrar for Community Care, a water distributor for Powered by People and a book drive organizer for the Inside Books Project. Amalia is an active student at Headwaters serving as the Director of Communications & Treasurer for Model United Nations and the Vice President of Honor Council. She has also given her time as a volunteer coach for Headwaters' Middle School Flag Football team.
 
Amalia will receive a copy of As Long As Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, from Colonization to Standing Rock by Dina Gilio-Whitaker. Gilio-Whitaker's book chronicles history of treaty violations, struggles for food and water security, and protection of sacred sites, while highlighting the important leadership of Indigenous women in this centuries-long struggle. If Amalia choses to apply to the University of Vermont she will also receive priority consideration Admission to the Honors College and UVM's top merit scholarships as well as an application fee waiver of $55.
