Headwaters' Commitment to Our Trans Kids and Families

Ted Graf, Head of School
Dear Headwaters Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, and Parents–

When the board of trustees unanimously adopted our Purpose statement in the summer of 2016, they were exceptionally clear that our school celebrates and values the right of every child to form and forge their own identity. Headwaters begins with that very premise–that each student in our care, for however long they may be with us, is our moral equivalent.

Governor Abbott's action this week ordering the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to investigate reports of gender-affirming procedures as child abuse flies in the face of our school’s values and is blatantly immoral. Our transgender, transitioning, and non-binary students, families, and community members have our unwavering support.

Our commitment to our LGBTQIA+ students, families, and colleagues is grounded in Advocacy, a mindset and outcome we expect all of our community members to work toward. Each of us must recognize our agency and act with integrity in pursuit of a more just and equitable society. To our transgender and non-binary students and families: we see you, we value you, and we honor your bravery, autonomy, and strength.

We assure you that there is no legal requirement for any adult to report a transgender minor, their parents, or caregivers to DFPS or Child Protective Services.

If you, your family, or your children need support related to this issue, please contact anyone on the Senior Leadership team or our counselors on the River or Creek Campuses.

Respectfully,

Ted
