October 2018 Student Spotlights

Last weekend the Headwaters Model UN team participated in the annual conference at LASA. We debated the ethics of stem cell research, how to address the opioid epidemic, and some of us rehashed the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Unification of Germany. All delegates did excellent work, but special recognition goes to Sasha Ashton and Emily Ambler, who brought home awards for best delegate and distinguished delegate, respectively. 

 

 

We had an incredible visit from students and faculty from Instituto Sanmiguelense in October! According to Dan Cummings, Head of High School, "The goal of this exchange was to initiate meaningful, global understanding between two IB school populations in order to promote peace. I am happy to report that our students were able to engage in both formal and informal dialogue about academics, cultural differences, and global events."

The students were able to experience daily life as they stayed with Headwaters host families.

 They presented about San Miguel de Allende to our entire high school, participated in a

language exchange with middle school students, and visited our elementary campus to teach students in second, third, fourth, and fifth grades about el Dia de los Muertos. Both faculty and students toured Austin, partook in a Chinese tea ceremony in our Introduction to Chinese Culture class, and learned about our signature YOLO program in Government and Economics. They also participated in a conversation about US/Mexico relations which was hosted by our Model United Nations club.

A special thank you to guide Hilda Reilly and Head of High School Dan for making this happen, Nora Dock for facilitating the hosting process, the host families, and all who welcomed our guests. We are so excited to send a group to visit Instituto Sanmiguelense in the future!

Headwaters Middle School proudly presents this year's fall production-- Hamlet! This Shakespeare classic will be given new life with our middle school performers in just one act. Hamlet is a tragedy set in ancient Denmark. The main protagonist is Prince Hamlet, the son of King Hamlet and Queen Gertrude. Claudius, King Hamlet's brother, has been crowned the new King and has married Gertrude. Shortly after his mother's marriage, Prince Hamlet meets his father's spirit. And it keeps getting more interesting from there. We will have two shows --  Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10, both shows at 7:00 PM at the Dougherty Arts Center. No tickets needed and the show is free to all!

Join the second edition of the Headwaters School Shark Tank! Last year, we had five student entrepreneur groups present to a panel of local sharks (business owners) to see who's idea had the most possibility. Last year's winners, Kate and Mattias, had the idea for an app that tracks your carbon footprint, but there were a range of great ideas including a fashion breakthrough, a new energy drink, and a better way for musicians to commute.

This year's competition will take place at the Capital Factory on Monday, December 3. Doors at 6:00 PM for a 6:30 PM start. We will have new entrepreneurs and new sharks and we can't wait to have you join our audience. Read more details here.
