In Response to the Tragedy in Uvalde

Ted Graf, Head of School
Dear Headwaters Community,

It is with pain and sadness that I write to you after learning that at least eighteen students and two teachers were killed at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas yesterday. It is always shocking when innocent people are targeted, but this tragedy hits close to our hearts and home.

Just ten days after the shooting in Buffalo, NY and one day after a shooting in Austin near Republic Square–we are reminded again that gun violence is the cause of so much pain for so many people.

Since its inception twenty years ago as Primavera and Khabele, our school has been committed to educating students so they are prepared to bring more peace to the world. We deplore violence and believe that violence only begets more violence. But here we are, once again, trying to make sense of the unexplainable.

Tomorrow, we will have one of our last days of this school year. Normally, these days are full of fun, full of reflection, and full of anticipation for the summer. We will do our best to make the days as joyous as possible, and we are prepared to receive your children however they may be. For those students who have questions, we will listen. For those who need support, we will provide it as best we can. For those who need the reassurances of routine, that will be happening.

As a reminder, Headwaters has counseling services that are available to students who may need extra support processing this terrible event. Here’s how:

If you are looking for ways to talk about this with your children, we recommend these resources:
In writing this note, I am reminding myself and each of us that we are part of a community that believes deeply in Dr. Montessori’s credo, “Peace is what every human being is craving for and it can be brought about by humanity through the child.”

As always, we remain committed to the safety of all students and employees, and we will continue to offer care and support, while, simultaneously, preparing for a range of emergency situations.

Please take care,
Ted
