Special Holiday for 8th Graders on Thursday, May 22, 2023

8th grade students will attend their finals Monday, May 19, 2025, through Wednesday, May 21, 2025, but will be given a special holiday on Thursday, May 23 so they can relax and prepare for graduation later that afternoon. We ask that all 8th grade graduates are brought to the Library’s Special Events Center by 1:30 p.m. for one final run

What To Bring/ Not to Bring

  • Students are asked to bring themselves by 1:15 p.m.! We will provide water bottles at their seats.
  • Please do not allow your student to have their phone with them for the ceremony. It’s really hard to not be distracted by devices and we want everyone to be present.

What To Wear

We recommend wearing something that makes graduates feel comfortable and confident! Graduates will be walking across the stage, so we recommend shoes that fit well and allow for easy walking, too.

Arrival Time for Graduates

We’d like graduates to arrive by 1:15 p.m. so they have time to settle into their assigned seating. Family is welcome to wait in the lobby until doors open at 1:45 p.m.

No Tickets or Reserved Seating for Families

First come, first serve. All are welcome to attend!

Parking

Families are welcome to pay for parking at the Austin Central Public Library. The entrance to the garage is off of West Avenue. Please see this link for more details about the lot. If the lot is full try City Hall or use your favorite parking app.

Additionally, families are welcome to park on the Headwaters Campus (in a Headwaters spot) for free and walk over to the Library.

Schedule of Events

  • Graduates arrive by 1:15 p.m. and go into the Auditorium (parents may wait in the lobby)
  • Doors open at 1:45 p.m.
  • The ceremony begins at 2 p.m.
  • The ceremony ends around 3 p.m.
  • Auditorium doors close at 3:30 p.m. You are welcome to remain in the library and outdoors as long as you wish.
What are the Gates of Life?
At the end of each school year, we have a Gates of Life ceremony for students who are moving up and moving on. This tradition spans across the grade levels at Headwaters and is a treasured tradition. We recite these words to mark the transition, "An ending is but another beginning. Rejoice all ye who pass through these gates."
