COVID-19 Testing Event

River Campus - 807 Rio Grande Street
In our continued effort to provide the safest learning environment possible, Headwaters will host a community COVID-19 testing site this Wednesday, December 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at our downtown River Campus, located at 807 Rio Grande Street. Both antibody and PCR testing will be available.
More details about the testing process and billing are below.

Provided by Austin Covid Labs, this testing is optional and available to all members of the Headwaters community, including parents, students, and staff. We highly encourage anyone who traveled over the Thanksgiving break to participate in testing. There is a wealth of information on their website, including details about each test that is offered, too.

While you do not need to pre-register, doing so helps the process move more efficiently on the day of testing. Please click here to register in the Austin Covid Lab system. If you choose to walk in, please have photo ID and any applicable insurance information with you.

We hope to continue to offer this service throughout the winter months. A strong turnout for this first event will help us learn more about our community’s desire for the program, as well as the best ways to efficiently provide the service and potentially expand to the other campuses. Please consider taking part, especially if you traveled or had guests outside of your household for the holiday last week.

Stay well,

Where do I go on the day of testing?
Testing will take place outside on the River Campus, in the parking lot in front of Building 4. You may park in any available school parking space - in front of Building 1, behind Buildings 1 and 3, under the Studio, etc. Note that street parking is metered. Please wear a mask and follow social distancing at all times. Walk up to the registration table to check in and the clinicians will direct you where to go.

What type of tests are offered?
Austin Covid Labs provides antibody tests, which will show if your body has produced antibodies to COVID-19, meaning that you were previously infected and have recovered from the virus. They recommend that everyone do an antibody test first, as people who have recovered from the virus do not need to test again for a month. This test is administered with a blood draw.

The lab also provides PCR testing, considered to be the gold standard of active infection tests. This is administered with a simple nasal swab.

When will I get my results?
Antibody test results are available within 15 minutes of testing. If you are planning to get both tests, Austin Covid Labs suggests starting with the antibody test, which, if positive, means you would not need the PCR test. PCR test results are available 24-48 hours after testing, and results are sent by email.

Do I need to share my results with Headwaters?
Because Headwaters is not a healthcare-related institution, our systems are not set up to handle HIPAA-sensitive information, like medical test results. All test results will be communicated directly with the person who was tested and not with the school. We ask that if your PCR test comes back positive, you inform the school and follow the CDC recommended protocols for isolation and quarantine.

Is there a cost for the test?
Austin Covid Labs is waiving their $35 booking and processing fee for us. COVID-19 PCR testing is currently free of charge for most people with insurance and for those who are uninsured. If you have Medicare, Medicaid, an HMO, or OSCAR, there is a $35 fee for PCR testing and a $50 fee for Antibody testing. If you have insurance but would prefer not to use it, the cost for the PCR test is $200 and $50 for the antibody test. See here for more details on fees and insurance.
