River Campus

The River Campus plans a full day of programming with the support of guides and students. We also enlist the local community to come and help share their knowledge with our community. Read more to learn about past themes.
In 2023, the theme was “Redefining Equality for ALL.” This theme is a way to umbrella the important social and political issues surrounding the lives of so many here in Austin and beyond. Through this day, our students will learn more about John Lewis and his life of “Good Trouble” starting in the Civil Rights Movement and how it continues on even today. We will explore LGBTQIA+ rights with Civil Rights Advocate Ash Hall as they talk about building bridges to become good advocates. And then in the afternoon will be spent in breakout sessions on topics ranging from bodily autonomy versus bodily integrity, ableism, voting, prison reform, consent, supporting trans youth, feminism, cultural literacy, inclusivity, and more.

In 2022,
students chose the topic "State of the State: Civil Rights in Texas Today." Our event was virtual, and our featured guest speaker was author Dr. Peniel Joseph, Associate Dean for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Professor of Public Affairs; Barbara Jordan Chair in Ethics and Political Values; Founding Director, Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. The students streamed either "The Hate U Give," "Just Mercy,"  or "Becoming."

In 2021, students chose the topic "Black Lives Matter." Our guest speaker was Rodney Duckett, a motivational speaker and community advocate. He is the founder of IMPAC (Intelligent Minds Providing & Applying Commitment), a non-profit whose mission is to improve the quality of youth lives. Our film was "Raise Hell: the Life and Times of Molly Ivins."

In 2020,
guest speaker and Executive Director of the Austin Justice Coalition Chas Moore spoke to our community and beyond at the Central Library. We also screened  "On the Basis of Sex" for our students.

In 2019
, guest speaker and civil rights leader Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez spoke at the Central Library. We screened "Documented."

In 2018, we welcomed Lewis Conway Jr., a local civil rights leader, to campus for our guest speech and welcomed local musician Tree G a moving musical performance. They stared the day with a screening at the Ritz of The Life and Times of Harvey Milk

In 2017 and before, the River Campus would hold a afternoon teach-in comprised of sessions related to MLK, civil rights, social justice, and community activism.
