School Counselors Amplify Student Success at Headwaters
Headwaters School
National School Counseling Week (February 2–6), led by the American School Counselor Association, highlights the essential role school counselors play in helping students grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
At Headwaters School, counseling is not an add-on. It’s an integral part of how we support students as whole people. Across campuses and age levels, our counselors help students build the skills they need to navigate school with confidence, empathy, and resilience.
Michelle Schmitz, LMSW, MSC, CMFSW, works with our middle and high school students, bringing more than 17 years of experience supporting youth and families. Her background spans social work, anthropology, and international education, and her approach reflects a deep understanding of adolescent development, identity, and culture. Michelle partners with students as they manage academic pressures, relationships, transitions, and personal growth—always with an emphasis on agency and trust.
At our Creek Campus, Cayla Cecil, LMSW supports elementary students through both individual and group counseling. Her work helps students learn to recognize emotions, develop healthy coping strategies, strengthen social skills, and build resilience early on. Cayla’s counseling program creates space for students to process experiences, connect with peers, and grow in confidence as learners and community members.
Together, Michelle and Cayla help create a school environment where students feel seen, supported, and equipped to succeed—academically and beyond.
We’re grateful for the care, expertise, and steady presence they bring to Headwaters every day. Their work truly amplifies student success.
